Astrophysics and Cosmology
Seminar Series
The UCSD Department of Physics Astrophysics and Cosmology Seminar will be held Mondays, 2:10 PM to 3:00 PM in the Mayer Room in Mayer Hall.
George Fuller and Brian Keating - organizers.
This seminar series will host speakers from the many fields associated with astrophysics and cosmology, both theory and experiment/observation. This is an exciting time in science. We know from observational astronomy that the ordinary standard model particles, in all of their manifestations, can comprise only some 4 or 5 percent of the closure density — the rest is in unknown forms. The history of astrophysics and cosmology is that insights are gained through a variety of modalities working together: Observation, theory, and laboratory experiment. This seminar series is dedicated to that spirit of cooperative discovery. The promise of breakthroughs in theoretical and experimental nuclear and elementary particle physics (e.g., beyond standards model physics, neutrino and dark matter direct detection experiments) combined with the juggernaut of new observational means of probing the cosmos (e.g., JWST and ELT/TMT, CMB, high energy particles and photons, multi-messenger astrophysics and gravitational waves) and the increasing capabilities of high performance computation auger well for for a future of new discoveries.
